Why Ramsar is in the news?

As Sundarban Wetland is newly added to Ramsar sites in India, now it is the largest Ramsar site in India ( Earlier largest wetland site was Vembanad-Kol wetland). Sundarban wetland is the home of Royal Bengal tiger & Irrawaddy Dolphin.

What is the Ramsar Convention?

The formal name of the Ramsar convention is " Convention on the wetland of international importance".
It has two main objectives:


  • Conserve and sustainable uses of Wetland
  • Stopping the encroachment of wetland site

Ramsar Convention is not legally binding and it is not part of the UN. In this convention, there are Montreux Record. 

What is the Montreux record?


Some wetlands sites may be included in Montreux record, for inclusion, there are two criteria:



  • It is likely to adverse ecological changes in the Wetland site. or
  • There has already been an adversely ecological changed in the wetland site.

In India, there is two wetland site that is included in the Montreux Record. Sites are:


  • Keoladeo National Park (Rajashtan)
  • Loktak Lake (Manipur)

As of 2019, there is 27 Ramsar site in India. The same are arranged from north to south.
