Air Pollutants types and Sources, health, environmental problems of Pollutant

There are two types of Air Pollutants:

Secondary Pollutants:

It s not emitted directly but is formed by the reaction of primary pollutants, some examples are :

  • Smog (a mixture of smoke and fog),
  • Ground-level ozone ( formed by the reaction of Hydrocarbon (HC) and Nitrogen oxides in the presence of sunlight),
  • acid rain,
  • Persistent organic pollutants

Primary Pollutants

Primary air pollutants are directly emitted from the source such as Co2, Co, etc.
The following are Primary Pollutants:
Sr No
Pollutant
Sources
Health & Environmental Problems
1
Co2
  • Burning of Fossil fuels like Coal, Pet Coke & Petroleum Products
  • Transport & Manufacturing Sector
  • Burning of Biomass burning such as crop residue & forest product

Major Green House Gases
2
CO
Incomplete incubation of Fossil fuels
Reduced the Oxygen level in Hemoglobin
3
Oxides of Sulphur (Sox)
Burning of fossil fuels like coal, Pet Coke & petroleum products
  • Can damage human & animal lungs,
  • forms secondary pollutant acid rain,
  • Cause metal corrosion and discoloring of building

4
Oxides of Nitrogen (Nox)
Burning of fossil & biomass fuels
  • Forms secondary pollutant acid rain,
  • Can damage tissue, viral infections, irritation of eyes

5
Particulate Matter
The building, roads construction
Mining, forest fire
  • Respiratory problems,
  • Blocking of air & sunlight to vegetation,
  • Decrease of Crop productivity

6
Hydrocarbon (HC)
  • Municipal Landfill,
  • Sewage,
  • Burning fuels

  • Form secondary pollutant that is ground level Ozone,
  • Cancerous for the Human body.
