Food and nutrition problems


As per Global hunger index,  India ranks in 2019 is 102 out of 117. Much below then Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.

Cause of food and nutrients problems:

  • Food shortage
  • High food prices
  • Cultural practice: In India, a large proportion of the population is vegetarians and does fasting. Due to cultural practice, protein-related deficiency such as stunting is communally found.
  • Population growths
  • Low productivity
  • Due to intensive farming nutrients in food get reduced
  • Natural calamities such as flood, cyclone, drought resulted in the loss of food production
  • Inaccessibility of food due to distribution problems of food, low income, political instability.




Result of food and nutrients problems;
  • Child mortality; refers to the mortality of children under five. It expresses per 1000 berths. As per the UN, in 2017 approximately 8 lakh infant death reported in India alone. 39 infant death per 1000 live births reported in India.
  • Wasting: Low weight as compared to height and age.
  • Stunting:  Short height as compare to weight and age.
  • Undernourishment: Not enough nutrients
  • Unhealthy people
  • Low productivity of human
