A concentric ring model of E. Burgess:
Burgess divides the urban land use pattern into 5 concentric rings.
Ring 1: Central Business District(CBD):
In this area, the following are the characteristics:
- The maximum intensity of commercial activity such as wholesale market
- No residence establishment as the land cost is too costly for resident
- The high cost of goods & services
Ring-2: Transitional Zone:
In this ring, the following are the characteristics:
- Slum settlements
- Polluted zone with high traffic
- Mix land use for commercial & residential
Ring-3: Middle-class income residential area:
In this ring, the following are the characteristics:
- Light manufacturing zone
- Entertainment zone
Ring-4: High-class income residential area
Rich people generally prefer this area as they have their own transport facilities to travel to the CBD area.
Ring- 5 Low-income class or Commuters zone:
- Daily wage earner lives here
- Land use pattern is fast-changing here, this is the convergence zone of urban & rural areas.
