Burgess divides the urban land use pattern into 5 concentric rings.

Ring 1:  Central Business District(CBD):
In this area, the following are the characteristics:
  • The maximum intensity of commercial activity such as wholesale market
  • No residence establishment as the land cost is too costly for resident
  • The high cost of goods & services

Ring-2: Transitional Zone:
In this ring, the following are the characteristics:
  • Slum settlements 
  • Polluted zone with high traffic
  • Mix land use for commercial & residential 
Ring-3: Middle-class income residential area:
In this ring, the following are the characteristics:
  • Light manufacturing zone
  • Entertainment zone


Ring-4: High-class income residential area
Rich people generally prefer this area as they have their own transport facilities to travel to the CBD area.

Ring- 5 Low-income class or Commuters zone:
  • Daily wage earner lives here
  • Land use pattern is fast-changing here, this is the convergence zone of urban & rural areas.
