Characteristics of Himalayan river |Geography of India| UPSC Geography Paper 2


There are three major Himalayan rivers that are:

  • Indus river
  • Ganga river
  • Brahmaputra


The following are characteristics of the Himalayan river:

  • They are originated from Himalayan Glaciers.
  • They are perennial rivers.
  • They make deep v-shaped valley called a deep gorge.
  • They are the antecedent river.
  • They make large drainage basins.
  • In the upper coarse, they do intense erosion activities.
  • In middle coarse, they form meanders, oxbow lakes, and large plain.
  • In lower coarse, they deposit larges amounts of silt and form the large delta at the mouth of the river.
