What are local Winds?

Local winds are caused by the local differences in temperature and pressure locally.
Local winds can be classified as warm winds and cold winds.

The following are important cold winds of the world:

  • Blizzard
  • Papagayo
  • Pampero
  • Suazo
  • Mistral
  • Bise
  • Bora
  • Gregale in Europe

The following are Warms and Hot Winds:
  • Santa Ana
  • Chinook
  • Twister
  • Zonda
  • Fohn
  • Doctor or Harmattan
  • Sirocco
  • Khamis
  • Haboob
  • Cape Doctor
  • BrickFielder
  • Loo
  • KaraBuran
  • Sukhovey

Blizzard winds:
It is in Canada. It is cold winds that blow from the northwest direction.
Papagayo:
It is cold winds that blow from Canada to the USA.



Surajo:
Surajo winds blow from the poles to Argentina


Chinook:
It is a wet and warm wind that originated in coastal areas of the Pacific ocean and flows from the southwest direction towards the USA.
It rains on the western side of the Rocky mountain and on the eastern side of the mountain. It helps to melt snow, that is why it is also called a snow eater.




Twister:
It is wet and destructive winds that originated in the Atlantic ocean and blow toward the eastern USA.



Pamparo:
It is cold winds originated and flow in Pampas grassland in Argentina, South America.




Cape doctor:
It is a cold wind, that originated in the Indian ocean, and blows from the southeast direction toward the Kalahari desert in southern Africa.


Doctor winds:
It is arid winds that originated in the Sahara desert and blow from the northeast direction toward Guinea country.

Haboob winds:
It is wet and warm winds originated in the red sea and blow toward the horn of Africa.


Sirocco winds:
It is arid and warm winds originated in Libya and flow toward Italy over the Mediterranean sea.
Sirocco causes blood rain in Italy because of the red dust of the Sahara desert.



KalaBuran:
It flows toward the Gobi desert in Magnolia from the northeast direction.



Sukhovey:
It flows toward Kazakhstan from China.



Loo:
It is hot winds that flow over the great Indian plain in the summer region.


Brickfielder:
It flows from the north direction over Australia.


Try to solve the following questions:
  •  Discuss the salient features of "Sirocco" and "Mistral". ( UPSC 2014, 150 words, 10 marks)
  • Write an explanatory note on local winds. ( UPPSC 2019)
