Agro-climatic zones | Agriculture | Geography of India

Based on the agriculture parameter such as Soil types and climatic parameters such as temperature, precipitation, and water resources availability. Food and Agriculture Organization ( FAO) defined the agro-climatic zone and the Planning Commission of India divided India into 15 agro-climatic zones. These are:

  • Western Himalayan,
  • Eastern Himalayan
  • Upper Gangetic Plain
  • Middle Gangetic Plain
  • Lower Gangetic Plain
  • Trans Gangetic Plain
  • Western Arid Plain and Hill region
  • Gujarat Plain and Hilly region
  • West Coastal Plain and Hills
  • East Coastal Plain and Hills
  • Western Plateau and Hill region
  • Center Plateau and Hill region
  • Eastern Plateau and Hill region
  • Southern Plateau and Hill region
  • Island Region

Western Himalayan:
  • Jammu and Kashmir, 
  • Ladakh, 
  • Himachal Pradesh, 
  • and the hilly region of Uttarakhand.

Eastern Himalayan:
  • All seven northeastern states and Darjeeling district of West Bengal.

Upper Gangetic plain:
  • Plain region of Uttarakhand, 
  • the western and central parts of Uttar Pradesh.

Middle Gangetic plain:
  • Easter Uttar Pradesh, 
  • Western Bihar.
Lower Gangetic plain:
  • Eastern Bihar, 
  • West Bengal except for the hilly region of Darjeeling district.

Trans Gangetic plain:
  • Punjab, 
  • Haryana, 
  • Chandigarh, 
  • Delhi, 
  • the northern part of Rajasthan.

Western dry region:
  • West of Aravali in Rajasthan.
Gujarat plain and hilly region:
  • Gujarat.

Western coastal plain and hilly region:
  • A coastal plain from Maharashtra to Kerala and hilly region of Sahyadris.

Eastern coastal plain and hilly region:
  • From Odisha coast to Tamil Nadu and eastern ghats.

Western plateau and hills:
  • Areas between the southern part of Malwa plateaus and the Deccan plateau of Maharashtra.

Central plateau and hills:
  • Bundelkhand's, 
  • Vindhyachal, 
  • Malwa plateau.

Eastern plateau and hills;
  • Chhota Nagpur plateau, 
  • Jharkhand, 
  • Odisha, 
  • Chhatisgarh.

Southern plateau and hills;
  • Interior region of Maharashtra, 
  • Karnataka, 
  • Telangana,
  •  Tamil Nadu.

Island region:
  • Lakshwadeep 
  • Andaman Nicobar islands.
