Based on the agriculture parameter such as Soil types and climatic parameters such as temperature, precipitation, and water resources availability, Food and Agriculture Organization ( FAO) defined the agro-climatic zone and the Planning Commission of India divided India into 15 agro-climatic zones; These are:


  • Western Himalayan,
  • Eastern Himalayan
  • Upper Gangetic Plain
  • Middle Gangetic Plain
  • Lower Gangetic Plain
  • Trans Gangetic Plain
  • Western Arid Plain and Hill region
  • Gujarat Plain and Hilly region
  • West Coastal Plain and Hills
  • East Coastal Plain and Hills
  • Western Plateau and Hill region
  • Center Plateau and Hill region
  • Eastern Plateau and Hill region
  • Southern Plateau and Hill region
  • Island Region

Upper Gangetic plain:

Region:
  • Plain region of Uttarakhand, 
  • the western and central parts of Uttar Pradesh.

Climate:
  • As per Koeppen Climate classification, it is Cwg means having a subtropical climate with winter dry

Soils:
  • Alluvial Soils deposited by River Ganga and Its Tributaries

Agriculture:
  • Sugarcane, Wheat, Paddy, Gram, Pulses



Middle Gangetic plain:
Regions:

  • Easter Uttar Pradesh
  • Western Bihar.
Climate:
  • As per Koeppen Climate classification, it is Cwg means having a subtropical climate with winter dry

Soils:
  • Alluvial Soils deposited by River Ganga and Its Tributaries


Agriculture:
  • Paddy, Wheat, Lichi



Lower Gangetic plain:
Regions:

  • Eastern Bihar, 
  • West Bengal except for the hilly region of Darjeeling district.
Climate:
  • As per Koeppen Climate classification, it is Cwg means having a subtropical climate with winter dry

Soils:
  • Alluvial Soils deposited by River Ganga and Brahmaputra and Its Tributaries

Agriculture:
  • Paddy with fish, 
  • Jute
  • Maize
