Physiographic division means the division of geographical areas based on physical characteristics. Physical characteristics include:

  • Rock types
  • Landform
  • Landscape
  • River
  • Physical History
  • Climate
  • Soil Types


Based on the distinct physical characters, India can be divided into six physiographic divisions; which are listed below:

  • Himalayan and northeastern mountain
  • The northern plain
  • Peninsular India
  • Indian desert
  • The coastal plains
  • The islands


Deccan region:
Peninsular India comprises two larger landmasses that are central highland and Declan plateaus. Deccan region is part of Peninsular India's physiographic region. 
Characteristics of the Deccan region:
The following are characteristics:
  • It is a triangular Shaped
  • It is composed of old crystalline, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. It is the oldest landmass due to the breaking and drifting of Gondwanaland.
  • It is in the south of the Narmada River
  • It lies between the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats
  • The extension of the Deccan region also found in Meghalaya comprises Gar, Khaso, and Jaintia.
  • The slope is from West to east.
  • Black or regur soils are found of volcanic origin.
