 only  93 % of land use data available, because Part of the Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh areas are occupied by Pakistan and China.

A proper land survey was not done in northeastern states except Assam.

Base on the land survey 1960-61 and 2008-09, the following land use pattern changes over time;

Four categories have undergone an increase

  • Net Sown Area
  • Forest
  • Non-Agricultural Use
  • Current Fallow land

Four categories have undergone a decrease:
  • Barren and wasteland
  • Cultural wasteland
  • Pasturing
  • Fallow land
Land use pattern largely varies state to state;

For example,

  • 80% of Net sown area is in Punjab and Haryana.
  • less than 10% areas In Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, and Andaman and Nicobars
