World distribution of precipitation UPSC | Climatology| Physical Geography

The distribution of rainfall in the world is highly variable however some generalizations can be done based on the cause of rainfall:
  • Rainfall is maximum at the equator due to conventional current formation and convergence of trade winds from both hemispheres.
  • Heavy rainfall in the area where  air converge
  • Low rainfall in the area where air divergence
  • The shifting of moist air mass causes heavy rainfall in the coastal area for example monsoon; in the winter Mediterranean zone receives higher rainfall.
  • Higher rainfall where warm ocean current formed and low rainfall where cold current flow.

The following are the distribution of precipitation in the world:
High rainfall areas( over 200 cm):
  • Equatorial region of Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia.
  • Eastern margin of the continent between 10 to 30-degree latitude; monsoonal, and Caribbean areas.
  • The western margin of the continent is between 40 to 60 decree latitude: due to westerlies

Moderate rainfall;( 100 to 200 Cm)
  • Subtropical areas: East China, eastern Brazil, southeast Asia, the interior part of India.

Low rainfall areas;
  • Tropical desert on the western margins of the continent
  • Interior highlands such as the Gobi desert, Magnolia, and Tibetan plateaus
  • Sahara region due to the canary cold current
  • California current
  • Western Australia.
