Present Status of Jute textile in India:

  • India is the largest producer of raw Jute.
  • We are also the second-largest Jute Exporter after Bangladesh.
  • Most Jute mills are located in West Bengal mainly on the Hoogly river

Historical Factors:

  • The First Jute mill was established in 1855 at Rishtra near Kolkata
  • After partition, 3/4th of Jute production areas went to Bangladesh but most of the Jute mills remained in India.


Factors responsible for Jute Textiles in the Hoogli basin:

  • Near Jute Production areas
  • Inexpensive Water transport
  • A good network of railways, roadways, and waterways
  • The abundance of water for processing raw jute
  • Cheap labor supply from West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and UP 
  • Kolkata as a large urban center provides banking, Insurance, and port facilities for the export and production of jute


Challenges:

  • Stiff competition in the International market from Synthetic substitutes and other competition from Bangladesh, Brazil, Philippines, Egypt, and Thailand.


Positive things:

  • High internal demand because of government policy for compulsory Jute backing bag usage in packaging
  • Growing international demand for Jute as Jute is an environmentally friendly and biodegradable material.
  • The main market is the USA, Canada, Ghana, Saudi Arabia, and Australia.
  • Future demand will also increase due to being environmentally friendly.
