- India and Nepal had Approx 66 % of the world's tiger population;
The population of tigers declined rapidly due to various reasons mentioned below:
- Poaching for trade; There is a great demand for the skin and bones of a tiger that uses in traditional medicine.
- Shrinking Habitat
- Depletion of prey species
- Growing human population
Project tiger was launched in 1973 to conserve the tiger population.
the following national parks and wildlife sanctuaries were notified under project tiger:
- Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand
- Sundarbans National park in west Bengal
- Bandhavgarh national park in Madhya Pradesh
- Bandipur National Park Karnataka
- Sariska Wildlife sanctuary in Rajasthan
- Manas tiger reserve in Assam
- Periyar Tiger Reserve in Kerala
Evaluation of project tiger 1973:
- A most successful project for conservation of wildlife protection
- At present, India is home to 80 % world's tiger population
- 2010: 1706 Tiger
- 2018: 2967
- Madhya Pradesh: 526
- Karnataka: 524
- Uttarakhand: 442.
