Social Forestry | Resources | Geography of India

Social forestry means:

  • Management and protection of forest
  • doing afforestation on barren land to help the environment and social and rural development.

The national commission on agriculture(1976) has classified social forestry into three categories:

  • Urban Forestry
  • Rural Forestry
  • Farm Forestry

Urban Forestry:

Raising and management of trees on public and privately owned land in and around urban centers such as green belts, parks, roadside, and around the industry.

Rural Forestry:

  • Emphasized the promotion of agroforestry and community forestry
  • Agroforestry means raising agriculture and forest on the same land
    •  getting food, fodder, fuel timber, and fruits
    • Utilizing the small wasteland to grow the forest
  • Community forestry means raising trees on public or community land such as village land, temple land, roadside, railways line, school, canal sides, etc

Farm Forestry:

  • It is a process where the former grow trees for commercial and non-commercial purposes on their farmland.
  • The Forest Department under the state government distributes seedlings of tree-free of cost to small and medium farmers.
