Tidal and wave energy resources UPSC | Resources | Geography of India

Tidal Energy

Ocean currents are storehouses of infinite energy in the form of waves and tides.

Due to the gravitational pull of mainly the Moon, water at the sea level rise and falls. Raised water from the sea can be a trap by building a flood dam at a narrow opening sea; water is used to run the turbine and generate electricity.

There are two potential locations to trap tidal energy:

  • Gulf of Kachchh
  • Sunderban delta region

Wave Energy

Waves in the sea are generated mainly by winds. The kinetic energy of a huge wave near the sea surface can be trapped to run the turbine and generate electricity.

The West coast of India is great potential for wave energy, but technological limitations; are not able to utilize it.
