Wildlife Sanctuary:

  • It is a wild habitat where endangered species are allowed to live here.
  • Not allowed activities like poaching, hunting, and trading of animals under wildlife sanctuaries.
  • Wildlife sanctuary can be declared by the state government by notification.
  • The boundary can be altered by the state assembly
  • Wildlife sanctuary can be upgraded into a national park
  • Limited human activities are allowed such as:
    • Timber harvesting
    • Collecting minor forest products such as Mahua, Tendu leaf, honey, etc
    • private land rights also being provided if not hampering the wildlife
  • As of December 2019 data, there are 553 total wildlife sanctuaries in India.
  • There are 23 wildlife sanctuaries in Uttar Pradesh
  • As per the 2016 data, the largest Wildlife sanctuary areas are in Gujarat followed by Andhra Pradesh Jammu, and Kashmir.


National Park:

  • A national park is also home to wildlife that can be notified by the state government and the boundary of the same can be altered by the state assembly.
  • The boundary of the national park is defined and fixed
  • No human activities are allowed.
  • No private land rights are allowed
  • No hunting and no trading are allowed.
  • As of December 2019 data, there is 101 total national park in India.
  • Dudhwa National Park is an important national park in Uttar Pradesh; tiger reserve in Lakhimpur district
