As of 2020,
- India is in the fourth position in the world in wind energy generation after China, the USA, and Germany.
- Total installed capacity-37 GW
- Wind energy production state-wise in decreasing order:
- Tamil Nadu
- Gujarat
- Maharastra
- Karnataka
- Rajasthan
Wind energy has been used for grinding grain and lifting water since human civilization. In modern times, windmills are used for wind farming to generate electricity for commercial uses. Winds rotate the windmill; the turbine attached to the windmill rotates and converts dynamic energy to electrical energy.
Potential Sources of Wind Energy:
- Permanent winds such as trade winds and westerlies flow
- Seasonal winds such as monsoon
- Local winds such as:
- Land Breeze and sea breeze
- Mountain breeze and valley breeze
Advantages of Windmill farming:
- It is pollution-free
- It is an inexhaustible source
- Low-cost production of electricity once setup.
- Safe and clean
- Environmental friendly
Disadvantages of Windmill farming:
- It creates noise pollution
- The initial cost is very high
- Need huge land
- It disturbs radio and T.V reception
- Also harmful to birds
- Need winds sped at least 15 km per hour
- Need a high level of maintenance
