What is the Petrochemical Industry and how it is different from the Petroleum refinery industry?

The petroleum refinery industry takes crudes as raw materials and processes them and produces various final products such as Gas, Naptha, Gasoline, Kerosene, Diesel, residue, and lubricant oil.

The Petrochemical Industry is next to the Petroleum refinery as it takes mainly Naptha, Petrol, Gas, and other products of the Petroleum refinery as raw material and produces various types of products such as Polymer ( complex carbon compound).

The petrochemical industry is not one industry, there are many industries that get the raw material from the by-product of crude oil processing, collectively called the petrochemical industry.

In 1960, the demand for organic chemicals increased which leads to the growth of the petrochemical industry.

Features of the Petrochemical Industry:

  • It is a modern Industry; evolved in the 1960s.
  • It is a mineral-based industry as raw materials get from mineral oil or petroleum refinery.
  • Organic chemical industry
  • Products of the Petrochemical Industry are used in the Manufacturing of :
    • Synthetic Fiber
    • Synthetic Rubber
    • Plastic
    • Dye
    • Drugs
    • Pharmaceutical
    • Soap, Detergent, Vasaline
    • Fertilizer and Pesticides
  • 75 % of petrochemical industries are on small scale.

Location factors of the Petrochemical Industry:

As the raw input of petrochemical is derived from an oil refinery, hence most of the petrochemical industries are located near oil refineries in Mumbai and Mumbai is the hub of petrochemical industries.

Petrochemical industries can be classified into further four categories:

  • Polymers
  • Synthetic Fibers
  • Elastomers
  • Surfactant intermediates

Polymer:

  • It has a complex carbon molecules compound
  • It is obtained from crude oil processing
  • It is an input material for the plastic industry

Synthetic fiber:

  • Has great strength, durability, washability, and resistance.

Administration of the Petrochemical Industry:

Three organizations are working as administrative control of departments of chemical and petrochemical:

Indian Petrochemical Corporation Limited( IPCL):

  • It is the Public sectors
  • It is responsible for the manufacturing and distribution of various petrochemicals like polymer, and fiber.

Petrofils Cooperative Limited(PCL);

  • It is a joint venture between the government of India and weaver cooperative societies.
  • Product; Polyester filament yarn and Nylon chip.

Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology(CIPET):

  •  It involved training in petrochemical industries.

Drawbacks of petrochemical industries:

  • Non-biodegradable
  • High pollution emissions while processing
  • Great threads to the environment.
