Reason for separate statehood demand:

  • Cultural and social affiliation
  • Strong perception of development; unequal socio-economic development creates the demand for separate statehood.
  • Political motive
  • Large population and expectation

The following are positive things of smaller state:

  • Efficient Administration:
    • As per the economic survey of India report 2016-17, smaller states are more efficient in administration and they do more trade.
  • Political stability
  • Inclusive development
  • Cultural and language homogeneity

Negative of smaller state:

  • Not much socio-economic development are seen in smaller state like Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Chhatisgarh.
  • The smaller state does not have sufficient resources to tackle natural hazard problems. For example, Uttrakhand flood.
  • Local coal scam, more corrupt practices seen in Jharkhand state
  • Smaller states are more dependent on the center for funds.
  • Increase of interstate issues

The smaller state is not a solution for socio-economic problems, unnecessary creation of state may lead to extra fiscal burden and inefficiency. Decent approaches in decentralized planning, multilevel planning, and cooperation can solve these problems.
