Answer.
The term "Naxalism " is derived from Naxalbari, a small village in West Bengal. The Naxalism movement was started in 1967 in West Bengal against local landlords by working peasants. The primary aim of Naxalism was to redistribute land to working peasants. It spread to less developed areas of states like Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Andhra Pradesh.
The present status of Naxal-affected areas in 2023 is as follows:
Naxal-affected areas had reduced from 96 districts in 10 states in 2010 to just 41 by late 2021.
Naxal-affected areas of India are also known as the Red Corridor of India.
Maoists or Naxalism are still active in South Bastar ( Chhattisgarh), Jharkhand, and the Andhtra-Odisha border.
Challenges to curtain the Naxalism in India:
Terrain and topography have acted as obstacles in defeating the Naxal or the Maoists.
The alienation of a section of tribals has allowed the Maoists to tap into discontent.
Maoists provide arms, ammunition, and money to People with no sources of living.
Government's efforts to control Naxalism in India:
Operation Green Hunt started in 2010 with the aim of minimizing the loss of human life by providing massive deployment of security forces in the naxal-affected region.
The aspirational districts Program was launched in 2018, with the aim of rapidly transforming naxal-affected districts.
