What is biogeography:
In biogeography, we study the things that are in between human geography[ which emphasized the study of the lithosphere( landforms, relief, physiography) and atmospheric and weather phenomenon)] and human geography[ which emphasized the study of human activities such as demographic, economic, and social aspects.]So we can say;
- Biogeography is the branch of geography that deals with biotic ( flora, fauna, and microorganism ) things.
- Microorganism also thrives in the soil, hence the soil part is also being studied in biogeography.
- we study the geographical distribution of plants and animals through a geological timescale.
The biosphere has two major parts:
- Soil
- Biotic or flora and fauna
Under the biogeography syllabus in UPSC, we will study the following topics:
- The genesis of soils; Classification and distribution of soils; Soil profile; Soil erosion, Degradation, and conservation;
- Factors influencing world distribution of plants and animals;
- Problems of deforestation and conservation measures; Social forestry; agro-forestry;
- Wildlife;
- Major gene pool centers.
