1.  (a) Which kind of garbage is not converted into compost by the redworms?

Answer:

Non-biodegradable things such as plastic or metals are not converted into compost by the redworms.


(b) Have you seen any other organism besides redworms, in your pit? If yes, try to find out their names. Draw pictures of these.

Answer:

Yes, some cockroaches, ants, rainy worms, and other insects and worms also live in the pit.


2. Discuss :

(a) Is garbage disposal the responsibility only of the government?

Answer:

No. Garbage disposal has everyone's responsibility. Disposal responsibility lies in individual, household, society, and government level


(b) Is it possible to reduce the problems relating to the disposal of garbage?

Answer:

Yes.

We can do the following things:

  • Minimizing the waste generation
  • Make the habit of reuse
  • Practice composting and vermicomposting


3. (a) What do you do with the leftover food at home?

Answer:

We do the following things:

  • We keep it in the refrigerator
  • We share with neighbors
  • We also provide to the needy person


(b) If you and your friends are given the choice of eating on a plastic plate or a banana leaf platter at a party, which one would you prefer and why?

Answer:

  • We would prefer banana leaf as it is environmentally friendly. Plastic is non-biodegradable waste that causes harm to the environment, we must avoid using it.


4. (a) Collect pieces of different kinds of paper. Find out which of these can be recycled.

Answer:

  • Papers which do not shine or do not have plastic coat can be recycled.

(b) With the help of a lens look at the pieces of paper you collected for the above question. Do you see any difference in the material of recycled paper and a new sheet of paper?

5. (a) Collect different kinds of packaging material. What was the purpose for which each one was used? Discuss in groups.

Answer:

Packaging materials:

  • Plastic
  • Paper
  • Wood
  • Gunny bag
  • Cloth

(b) Give an example in which packaging could have been reduced?

Answer:

Carry a bag when we go in shopping for food, vegetable, cloth, and other shopping. This will reduce the packaging.

(c) Write a story on how packaging increases the amount of garbage.

Answer:

Monu is my best friend, his father is working in a big company and they are living in the city. They usually make shopping online where they get the things that are packed with plastic and other materials. They also order food online, get the packet food. They do not buy milk from milkmen they prefer to buy packet milk. On the festival or other occasion, they give the packet gift to others and also receives the packet gift. 

Now, his father got the transfer to another city, they called the private courier to pack the home stuff and get transported to other places.

The above is the story of my friend, this is happening everywhere that leads to an increase in the amount of garbage.

6. Do you think it is better to use compost instead of chemical fertilizers? Why?

Answer:

Compost has the following advantage over fertilizers:

  • Compost is environment friendly whereas fertilizer is not because it pollutes both soil and water.
  • Compost makes soil humus rich that enables the soil to retain more moisture that helps to enrich the microorganism in the soil whereas fertilizers work just opposite of it.
  • Compost reduces the waste from surrounding which helpt to clean the environment.
  • Compost is cheaper than the fertilizer

Hence we can say, it better to use compost over chemical fertilizers.
