 1. In what ways does the media play an important role in a democracy?

Answer:

Independent media ( not found in reality) play a very important role in a democracy in the following way:

  • Reliable and unbiased media report helping the government and public. It is key to good governance.
  • They provide information of various government schemes, information happening around the world to the public.
  • On the basis of the media reports, the public organizes protests, start a signature campaign, asking the government to rethink its program.
  • Media help the shaping of the perception of the masses.

2. Can you give this diagram a title? What do you understand about the link between media and big business from this diagram?

Answer:

  • Big business house control the media by proving money to them through advertisement
  • The business house also influences the media to spread the one side or biased information in order to get the benefits.

3. You have read about the ways in which the media ‘sets the agenda’. What kind of effect does this have in a democracy? Provide two examples to support your point of view.

Answer:

The media sets an agenda on what to present or skip. By focusing the particular issues, media influence our perception, thought, and course of action; shaping the thought is commonly known as "sets the agenda".

  • Positive effect:
    • Media draw attention to some specific problems such as environment, flood, terrorism that help in finding the solution
    • Bringing the right attention, sometimes bring justice to people.
  • Negative effect:
    • Some time media fails to make the actual problems. For example, Businessmen, celebrities, or politicians came in highlighted news but problems of poor people, slums, etc do not get attention from the media.
