Yes, the first step of soil formation is weathering. It is weathering or depth of weathered materials which is the basic input to soil formation.
- First, the weathered materials are colonized by bacteria or small plants like mosses and lichens. And, many microorganisms may take shelter within the weathered materials.
- Dead remains of the plants and microorganisms help in humus formation.
- Small grasses and ferns start growing.
- Later bushes, trees, and other animal make their habitat.
So we can say, weathering is essential as a prerequisite in the formation of soils.
