Question:
What relationship is explained by the rock cycle between the major type of rock? ( NCERT, Class 11, Fundamentals of Physical geography)
Answer:
Rocks do not remain in the same form, rocks are transformed from old to new ones. There are three major types of rock that are igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock.
The following are the relations between the major rock types:
- Igneous rocks are primary rocks, formed from molten magma by the cooling process.
- Metamorphic and sedimentary rocks are secondary rocks as it derived from primary rock.
- Sedimentary rocks formed from sediments of igneous and metamorphic rocks.
- Sedimentary rocks can also be turned into sediments and formed sedimentary rocks.
- Through the subduction process[ convergence of two plates]; Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks can be turned into magma.
