The GDP of Uttar Pradesh ranks 3rd in India. It is basically an agro-based economic state, but many traditional industries do exist and it is becoming the hub of electronic industries in India.
There are four economic regions of Uttar Pradesh:
- Western Region
- Central Region
- Eastern Region
- Bundelkhand Region
Western Economic region:
It is located in the western part of Uttar Pradesh. Mainpuri and Shahjahanpur districts on the southeastern side of the region and Saharanpur district is located on the northern side of the region.
Important economic activities:
- Moradabad is the hub of brass work.
- Meerut is the hub of Goldwork.
- Bulandshahar is best known for pottery work.
- Agra is a key center of leatherwork.
Central Economic region:
It is located in the central part of Uttar Pradesh, some districts are Kheri, Farrukhbad, Kanpur, Raibareily, Bara Banki, etc.
Important economic activities:
- Kanpur is the key center for the leather and sugar industries.
- Farrukhabad is the hub of textile printing.
- Kannauj is the hub of the perfume industry.
Eastern Economic region:
It is located in the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh. Some districts are Fatehpur, Bahraich, Kausambi, Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Sonbhdra, etc.
Important economic activities:
- Mirzapur and Sonbhdra are the hubs of cement industries, power generation, and some heavy industries such as alumina plants are located there.
- Varanasi is the hub of traditional textile work.
- Industry for manufacturing the Diesel railway engine is located in Varanasi.
- Fertilizer and tourism industries are well developed in the Prayagraj.
Bundelkhand Economic region:
It is located in the southern part of Uttar Pradesh. It is comprised of 7 districts namely Lalitpur, Jhansi, Jalaun, Mahoba, Hamirpur, Banda, and Chitrakoot.
Important economic activities:
- Shoe industries in Hamirpur.
- The soft toy industry in Jhansi.
- Lalitpur is famous for Zari Silk Sarees.
