Question.
Give an account of the erosional landform produced by wind. ( UPPSC 2020)
Answer.
The wind is a very active geomorphic agent in desert areas where little vegetation and strong surface winds are present. Erosion and deposition landforms created by winds are also called aeolian landforms.
The following are the erosional landforms created by wind:
- inselbergs or Monadnock
- Zeugen
- Mushroom rocks
- Pediplains
Inserlbergs or Monadnock:
- As we know that wind erodes soft rock faster than hard rock. There are some hard rocks in the desert, which the wind is unable to erode, as a result, it remains higher or mountain-like structure than the surrounding plains, this is called Inserlbergs or Monadnock.
Zeugen:
- It is a tablet-shaped area of rock where the soft rocks around it are eroded by winds.
Mushroom rocks:
- When winds erode more of the lower part of the rocks than the upper part of the rocks, remains rock looks mushroom-like with a narrow base and broad top, this is called mushroom topography.
Pediplains:
- In desert areas, higher relief gets eroded and forms a featureless plain with hard rock at its base, called a pediplains.
