Compare between the tropical and temperate cyclones

Following are the comparison of tropical and temperate cyclones:

Origin:

The origin of a tropical cyclone is thermal because it is caused by the evaporation of ocean water due to insolation in the ocean, whereas the origin of a temperate cyclone is dynamic because it occurs at the boundary of two air masses, due to the difference in temperature and pressure of the air masses.

Location:

Tropical cyclones originate between 10° to 30° latitude in both hemispheres and originate only in the warm ocean, whereas temperate cyclones originate in higher latitudes beyond 30° latitude and can occur both on land and in the ocean.

Energy Source:

The latent heat of evaporation is the main source of tropical cyclones while the interaction of two different air masses [frontogenesis] is the main source of temperate cyclones.

Characteristics and Impacts:

  • The diameter of tropical cyclones [100–300 km] is less than that of temperate cyclones [diameter 1000–1500 km].
  • The wind speed of tropical cyclones is much faster than that of temperate cyclones and hence tropical cyclones cause more damage than temperate cyclones.
  • Tropical cyclones move from east to west in the Northern Hemisphere and from west to east in the Southern Hemisphere, while temperate cyclones move from west to east in the Northern Hemisphere and from east to west in the Southern Hemisphere.
