About Biome:
A biome is a plant and animal community found in large geographic areas.
The geographical extent of a biome is often determined by climate.
There are five major biomes on earth which are as follows:
- Forest Biome (rainforest, deciduous forest, temperate forest, boreal forest)
- grassland biome
- desert biome
- aquatic biome
- high altitude biomes
Savannah Biome:
There are two types of grassland biomes – tropical grassland and temperate grassland.
Tropical grasslands are called savanna biomes.
The savanna biome is also called savanna grassland, savanna forest biome, or tropical grassland.
It is situated between tropical forests and tropical deserts. It is found in Africa, Australia, South America, and India.
Salient Features [ Ecological aspect] of the Savanna Biome:
Ecological aspects of the Savanna biome mean all the factors and components of the biome.
The following are ecological aspects or salient features of the Savanna biome:
- The savanna biome receives 50 to 125 cm of rainfall per year.
- The climate of the savanna biome is warm hot climate.
- Here tall grasses and in some places small trees are found in small numbers.
- Plants in savanna biomes often have long roots and thick bark, which protect them from fire as fire is a common occurrence in this biome.
- The soil here is thin and there is less humus in the soil.
- Here the leaves of the tree fall in the dry season.
- Savannah has the highest number of grazing animals as it is basically a grassland ecosystem.
- Some of the important animals of the savanna biome are giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, leopards, hyenas, elephants, rats, moles, snakes, insects, etc.
- Poaching and hunting of animals, and climate change are major threats to the Savanna biome.
