Mention the Agricultural regions of India and give a detailed description of anyone. ( UPPSC, 2020, 10 Marks)

Answer.

An agricultural region is a land unit where there is homogeneity among agricultural crops. The agricultural region can be classified into many types based on a definite combination of several factors such as crops, livestock, soil, and climate.

There is a lot of diversity in the way of growing crops and animals in India.

According to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), India can be divided into six agricultural regions on the basis of uniformity of crops, livestock, and climate.

The following are the six agricultural regions of India:

  • Fruit and Vegetable Agricultural region
  • Wheat and sugarcane Agricultural region
  • Maize and Coarse Grain Agricultural region
  • Rice-jute-tea Agricultural region
  • Cotton agricultural region
  • Millet and oilseeds agricultural region

Cotton region:

  • The cotton region is mainly spread over the Deccan Traps where black or regur soils are found.
  •  It is part of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka.
  • The rainfall in this region ranges from 75 cm to 100 cm.
  • The main crop of this region is cotton but many crops like Jowar, Bajra, sugarcane, gram, wheat, etc. are also grown in this area.
