Question.
"Population did not spread like a drop of oil, it grew like clumps of coral"-justify the above statement keeping in view the urbanization in India. ( UPPSC, 2020, 15 Marks)
Answer.
"Population did not spread like a drop of oil, it grew like clumps of coral", said Vidal de La Blanche.
Following is the justification of the above statement in urbanization in India:
La Blanche believed that the population of any place is constantly changing but does not spread rapidly around itself like a drop of oil; like coral, it tends to condense in its place and spreads slowly.
For example,
- Indian urban centers like Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata, etc. are overcrowded and the population is not spreading like a drop of oil.
Just like the development of coral is dependent on many factors, similarly, the population of the area depends on many factors like availability of resources, infrastructure and communication facilities, security, etc.
For example,
- Surat, Agra, Hyderabad, Pune, Bangalore, etc. are the fastest-growing urban centers of India due to favorable living environments.
- The population of some cities like Bokaro Steel City is stagnant due to fewer opportunities.
New industrial developments, wars, epidemics, civil wars, disasters, etc. disturb the population of the region, but this is temporary as coral bleaching occurs.
For example,
- New satellite cities are being developed around major metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai due to their favorable living conditions and for this, the pollution of metro cities is also a factor.
