Question.
Write short notes on Ferrous and Non-ferrous minerals. ( UPPSC, 2020, 10 Marks)
Answer.
Due to the diversity in the geological structure, many types of minerals are found in India. On the basis of physical and chemical properties, minerals can be classified into two parts:
- Metallic minerals
- Non-Metallic minerals
Further, metallic minerals can be classified into two parts:
- Ferrous minerals
- Non-ferrous minerals
Ferrous Minerals:
Minerals that contain iron are ferrous minerals.
For example,
- Iron, manganese, chromite, etc.
Iron ore:
- The largest deposits of iron ore are in Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, etc.
Manganese:
- Manganese is an important raw material for smelting iron and is found in almost all geological formations but is found in the highest amount in the rocks of Dharwad.
- Odisha is the largest producer of manganese.
Non-Ferrous Minerals:
The minerals which do not contain iron are called non-ferrous minerals.
For example,
- Copper, Bauxite, etc.
India does not have many resources for non-ferrous minerals except bauxite.
Bauxite:
- Odisha is the largest producer of bauxite.
Copper:
- Copper metals are used in electrical industries such as making wires, electric motors, transformers, and generators. Small producers of copper are Guntur district (Andhra Pradesh), Chitra Durg (Karnataka), and South Arcot district (Tamil Nadu).
