(NCERT class 12 geography, India People and Economy, Chapter 1- Population: Distribution, Density, Growth, and Composition)
Answer.
According to the 2011 census, there are four major categories of the working population of India:
- Cultivator
- Agricultural laborer
- Household industrial worker
- Other workers are traders, people involved in services, and other professionals.
Cultivators and agricultural laborers are involved in the agricultural sector. According to the 2011 Census, about 54.6 percent of the total working population (in 2001 it was 58.2) are cultivators and agricultural laborers, which means that the agriculture sector accounts for the largest share of Indian workers.
The largest share of Indian labor is engaged in the agriculture sector due to the following reasons:
- About 68.8 percent of the total population of India resides in villages.
- There is a low level of industrialization( 31.2 %) in India.
- There is less opportunity for workers in manufacturing and service activities.
- Lack of professional skills among workers.
