Comment in brief on the polycyclic landforms. (UPPSC 2017)

Write explanatory notes on Polycyclic landforms. ( 2002)

Answer.

Polycyclic landforms are those landforms that are formed from several erosive cycles of landforms at different times.

If the landscape has gone through several cycles of erosion (which could have been interrupted by land uplift or lowering of the base level), the landscape may have the remains of many unfinished landforms.

For example,

  • The "Patland" present in Ranchi is an example of a polycyclic landform. Earlier the landscape( Patland) was peneplain and as we know the Peneplain landform is an example of an old-stage fluvial landform. It is found on top of the younger landform, which means that the land has been uplifted, hence it is polycyclic.
  • Damodar Valley is a multi-layered valley, and it is formed by the rejuvenation of landforms.
  • The Uttarakhand River valley is also three-tiered, formed by uplifting the land three times.
  • Old alluvial terraces like Bhangar are also examples of polycyclic landforms.
