Question.

Why do some states of India have higher rates of work participation than others?

(NCERT class 12 geography, India People and Economy, Chapter 1-  Population: Distribution, Density, Growth, and Composition)

Answer.

On the basis of economic status, the population of India can be divided into two groups:

  • Working population.
  • Non-working population.

The labor population includes both main workers and marginal workers. The main work is the person who works for at least six months in a year. A marginal worker is a person who works for less than six months in a year.

The work participation rate is the number of people involved in economic activities. The work participation rate is the percentage of the working population (both main workers and marginal workers) to the total population.

India's work participation rate in 2011 was only 39.8 percent. the work participation rate is not uniform across India.

States which have a high work participation rate are Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Meghalaya. The union territories of Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman Diu (49.9 percent) have the highest labor participation rate.

The work participation rate is high in these states of India as compared to other regions, mainly due to the low level of economic development in the states as many manual workers are required to perform subsistence or near subsistence economic activities.
