(NCERT class 12 geography, India People and Economy, Chapter 1-  Population: Distribution, Density, Growth, and Composition)

Answer.

We express population density as the number of people per square kilometer of area. According to the 2011 census, the density of population in India is 382 persons per sq km, in 1951 it was 117 persons per sq km.

The density of population in India is not uniform, there are inter-state and intra-state variations. The following are the spatial patterns of the density of population in India (as per the 2011 census):

  • Arunachal Pradesh has the lowest population density at 17 persons per sq km.
  • The highest population density is in the National Capital Region (11,297).
  • Bihar (1102) has the highest population density among the states.
  • West Bengal (1029), Uttar Pradesh (828), Kerala (859), and Tamil Nadu (555) have the highest population densities.
  • The central Indian states (Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh) and Orissa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh have moderate population densities.
  • The Himalayan, other hills, and northeastern states have low population densities.
