Write a descriptive note on the Types of folds. (UPPSC 2020)
Answer.
Originally sedimentary rocks are formed from flat horizontal layers( or sheets). But somewhere, due to unequal pressure or contraction force inside the earth layers of rock get bends and takes shape in wave form, bending of rocks layers is called folding in geography.
The following are three types of folds on the earth's surface-
- Anticline
- Syncline
- Monocline
Anticline:
Anticline is a type fold that is concaved downward. It makes an arch-like shape.
Example,
- Dome is an example of the Anticline fold which is concaved downward.
Syncline:
A syncline is a type of fold that is concaved upward. Syncline has the trench-like pattern
For example,
- Basin is a circular fold that is concaved upward.
Monocline:
A monocline is the type of fold that makes steps like patterns.
