Differentiate between barren and wasteland, and culturable wasteland.

Answer.
Following are the differences between "barren and wasteland" and "culturable wasteland":
- "Barren and wasteland" is land unsuitable for agriculture while "culturable wasteland" is land suitable for agriculture.
- "Barren and wasteland" includes mountainous areas, desert lands, and ravines while "culturable wasteland" includes general cultivable land that is left uncultivated for more than five years.
- “Barren and wasteland” cannot be brought under cultivation under available technology whereas “culturable wasteland” can be brought under cultivation with available technology.
- In the year 1950-51, "barren and wasteland" was 13.4% of the total area, while in the same year "culturable wasteland" was 8% of the total area.
- In the year 2014-15, "barren and wasteland" was 5.5% of the total area while in the same year "culturable wasteland" was 4% of the total area.
- The rate of decline of "barren and wasteland" from 1950-51 to 2014-15 was 58.96% (from 13.4% to 5.5%), while the rate of decline of "culturable wasteland" during the same time was 50% (from 8 to 4%).
