Answer.
The literacy rate is one of the indicators of social empowerment. A literate person is a person who is above 7 years of age and who understands any one language and can read and write in that language.
According to the 2011 census, India's total literacy rate is approximately 74.04 % and the literacy rates of Kerala (93.91%), Mizoram (91.58%), Lakshadweep (92.28%), and Goa (87.40%) are among the top states in India. The following reasons are responsible for the higher literacy rate in these states as compared to other states:
- The societies and governance systems of these states (Kerala, Mizoram, Lakshadweep, and Goa) recognized the importance of education in development and they put more energy, time, and money into educating the people.
- The population size of these states is tiny compared to other states (Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh).
- The society in the above states is less divided in the name of caste, religion, language, etc., compared to other big states (Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh).
