In the Census of India, migration is enumerated on two grounds:
- Lifelong migrant
- Migrants by the last residence
Lifetime migrant (place of birth):
- If the place of birth is different from the place of enumeration, it is called a lifelong migrant. For example, if Banshi Lal currently working in Delhi but was born in Renukoot, Uttar Pradesh, then Banshi Lal will be called a lifelong migrant.
Migrant by the last residence. (place of residence):
- If the previous place of residence is different from the place of present enumeration, people in a such category will be included in migrant by the last residence.
- For example, if Banshi Lal currently working in Delhi and previously studied in Kanpur but was born in Renukoot, Uttar Pradesh, Banshi Lal will also be counted among migrants according to his previous residence.
- According to the 2011 Census, about 37% of the country's total population was reported as migrants by the last residence, it was 31% in the 2001 census.
