Why is the female marriage migration law in Meghalaya different?

 Question.

Why is the female marriage migration law in Meghalaya different?

(NCERT class 12 geography, India People and Economy, Chapter-2:  Migration: Types, Causes, and Consequences.)

Answer.

As we know Meghalaya is dominated by three tribes Garo, Khasi, and Jaintia. The Khasi tribe constitutes about half of the state's population. Mainly the Khasi and Jaintia tribes do not follow the patriarchal system of society but they follow the matrilineal system of society.

  • The matrilineal system is different from the matriarchal system. In matrilineal systems, women do not dominate men, nor do they participate in public decision-making, whereas in matriarchal systems, women often dominate men.
  • In the matrilineal system, women inherit property from their mothers.
  • After marriage, men go to the woman's house.

That is why the female marriage migration law in Meghalaya is different from elsewhere due to the above customs.
