(NCERT class 12 geography, India People and Economy, Chapter-2: Migration: Types, Causes, and Consequences.)
Answer.
In the rural-urban migration stream, the region of origin would be the village and the region of destination would be the city. Since in our country, mainly male and working people migrate in rural-urban migration, due to which the age and sex structure of the place of origin (village) and destination (city) has both adverse and favorable effects which are as follows:
- Rural-urban migration is male-dominated, due to which there are more males in urban centers and fewer males in rural areas.
- Generally, the working population (15-59 age group) migrates in the rural-urban migration stream. Therefore, urban centers tend to have a higher youth population, and rural areas tend to be left with older people, children, and women.
- In terms of age-gender structures, rural has a higher population of children, older people, and women, and vice versa than cities.
- Selective age and gender migration in rural-urban streams lead to regional imbalances.
- Rural-urban migration increases urbanization and improves the quality of life of the people.
