Why is inter-state male migration higher from rural to urban?

Question.

Why is inter-state male migration higher from rural to urban?

(NCERT class 12 geography, India People and Economy, Chapter-2:  Migration: Types, Causes, and Consequences.)

Answer.

The change in the place of residence of people temporarily or permanently is called migration. There are two types of migration:

Internal migration (within the country).

International migration (outside the country).

There are two types of internal migration:

  • Intra-State Migration (Within State)
  • Interstate Migration (Out of State)

According to the 2011 Census, male migration in the inter-state (out-of-state) stream is more from rural to urban and it is higher due to the following reasons:

  • In some states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, there are very few economic opportunities in rural areas, so most men (due to long distance) prefer to migrate to urban areas of other states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, etc. In the 2011 census, 24% of men migrate in search of jobs and employment.
  • For better education facilities, rural students (mainly boys) go to study in other state's urban centers.
  • Women generally prefer to work in nearby rural areas or nearby urban centers but do not like to travel long distances.
  • Therefore, inter-state male migration is more from rural to urban, mainly in search of better economic opportunities and better education and healthcare.
