Question.
Identify the main reason for male/female selective migration.
(NCERT class 12 geography, India People and Economy, Chapter-2: Migration: Types, Causes, and Consequences.)
Answer.
The reasons for male and female migration are different.
Following are the main reasons for male/female selective migration: (As per the 2011 Census)
- About 66 percent of women leave their parents' house after marriage to move to another place in-laws while only 4 percent of men leave their parent's house after marriage. This is the main reason for rural-to-rural women migration except in the state of Meghalaya.
- Apart from marriage, women migrate to distant villages or cities in search of work and employment. Only 2% of women migrate in this category.
- About 24 percent of male migrants migrate in search of work and employment while only two percent of women migrate for the purpose of work and employment.
From the above, we know that marriage is the main reason for women's migration and the main reason for men's migration is in search of work and employment.
