(NCERT class 12 geography, India People and Economy, Chapter-2: Migration: Types, Causes, and Consequences.)
Answer.
Migration means the change of residence of people temporarily or permanently. Migration is a very important factor in the redistribution of the population over time and space.
There are four streams of internal migration (within the country):
- Rural to Rural (R-R)
- Rural to Urban (R-U)
- Urban to Urban (U-U)
- Urban to Rural (U-R)
According to the 2011 Census, women predominate in rural to rural migration in both interstate and interstate migration due to the following reasons:
- Rural-to-rural migration of most of the women is due to marriage. About 66% of women leave their parents' house after their marriage and go to their in-laws' house in another village.
- Rural to rural migration is generally short-distance migration and for this reason, also women migrate as agricultural laborers.
