Our earth has two major components - the physical environment (nature) and all forms of life including human beings.

In physical geography, we study the physical environment (landforms, atmosphere, and hydrosphere).

As per the German geographer, Friedrich Ratzel,

Human geography is the synthetic study of the relationship between human societies and the earth's surface.

As per the American Geographer, Ellen Churchill Semple,

Human geography is the study of the changing relationship between the unresting man and the unstable earth.

As per the French Geographer, Paul Vidal de la Blache,

Human geography is the study of the physical laws that govern our earth and the relations between the living being which inhabit it.

In Human Geography we study the following things:

The study of the interrelationship among the major components of the earth- the physical environment (natural), the human world (the cultural world), and humans.

Study of the spatial distribution of human phenomena such as human settlements, agricultural patterns, resources, population, geopolitics, etc.

Study the patterns, causes, and consequences of social and economic differences in different parts of the world.

For example,

  • In Human geography, we study the following important things,
  • Evolution of geographical thought over time.
  • How human changes the natural environment and how nature shapes our food, clothes, and other activities.
  • Distribution of agricultural pattern, population, and resources.
  • Types and distribution of human settlements such as villages, cities, megacities, etc.
  • Role of the physical environment in our political system.
