Question.
Distinguish between port and harbor.
(NCERT class 12 geography, India People and Economy, Chapter-11: International Trade)
Answer.
Both the port and the harbor belong to the coastal areas where ships and cargo docks. But there is a difference between the two in terms of the facilities available and the size.
A port provides commercial facilities to dock ships, large vessels, and cargo for a sufficiently long period, while Harbor allows ships to dock for short periods for protection from waves, tides, or refueling.
The port has commercial facilities like a warehouse, forklift, and loading and unloading whereas the Harbor lacks these facilities.
The port is well connected through roads, highways, railways, and airports whereas the Harbor lacks these connectivities.
Ports are larger in size and are built for commercial use whereas a Harbor can be natural or artificial and is a small stretch of coastline where ships dock.
In general, all ports can be harbored but not all harbors are ports.
For example,
Mumbai is a natural harbor as well as the largest port in India.
Chennai is an artificial harbor as well as a port.
