(NCERT class 12 geography, India People and Economy, Chapter-12: Geographical Perspective on Selected Issues and Problems)

Answer.

Slum settlements are a type of urban settlements that live in environmentally vulnerable areas of an urban area and slum houses are made up of huts.

Dharavi (Mumbai) slums are the largest settlements in Asia.

There are many problems in slums, one of them is that the children living there are deprived of school education.

Children of slum dwellers are deprived of school education due to the following reasons:

The slum dwellers earn very little. They mostly work in the unorganized sector as labor. They do not have enough money to send their children to school.

In slums, there is a lack of education and health facilities from the government and even if it is, its capacity is not good.

Most of the children of slum dwellers work to supplement the family income.

The slum environment is unhygienic and due to a lack of clean drinking water and open toilets, most of the children fall prey to diseases and are unable to take regular education.

Therefore, children living in slums are deprived of school education due to the low income and the unhygienic environment of the families of slum dwellers.
