Question.
Why are the inhabitants of coastal and plain regions engaged in fishing and agriculture respectively?
(Class 12 geography, Fundamentals of Human Geography, Chapter-5. Primary Activities )
Answer.
Fishing and agriculture activities are a type of primary activities as they are directly dependent on the environment such as land, water, vegetation, and atmosphere.
The inhabitants of the coastal areas are engaged in fishing activities as they are able to easily access the sea water which is the home of marine fishes. Backwaters, brackish lakes, and estuaries are found in the coastal region which is suitable for fish farming. Fishing is the most suitable primary activity in the coastal areas as the natural environment supports it, which is why the inhabitants of the coastal area are engaged in fishing activities.
In the plains, agriculture is the most suitable primary activity as the plains are almost flat and have fertile soils as well as abundant surface and groundwater for agriculture, making them ideal for all forms of agriculture. This is the reason why the inhabitants of the plains are engaged in agricultural activities.
