Question.
Write a short essay illustrating growth without development and growth with development.
(Class 12 geography, Fundamentals of Human Geography, Chapter - 4. Human Development )
Answer.
The concept of growth and development has evolved over time. In the era of world war, the meaning of growth and development was the same. The concept later became clearer when it was found that some countries achieved high economic growth but actually increased the number of poor people, and the gap between the rich and the poor increased. Hence, the concepts of growth and development were separated later.
Growth without development increases the GDP of the country but does not improve the lifestyle of the people of the country. It makes rich people richer and poor people poorer. Facilities like hospitals, transport, and school facilities increase but only rich people are able to use them. Poor people live away from basic facilities. In the name of economic growth (GDP) of the country, the resources of the countries will be exploited by the selected people which will be harmful to the environment as well as harmful to the sustainable development of the country. The country would not be able to utilize its full potential of human resources as a large part of the population would be illiterate and unhealthy.
Growth with development will increase the GDP of the country as well as improve the quality of livelihood of the people of the country. It will increase the overall facilities[ hospitals, schools, roads, etc] that will be accessible to almost all the population, regardless of economic and social status. Growth with development will lead to inclusive development of the country which will improve the quality of human resources and ultimately help in the sustainable development of the country.
